Think about social and economic inequalities in your own country.

  • Are there big differences between the rich and the poor where you come from?
  • Where can you see these differences the most?
  • Which groups are affected?
  • What can be done to close the divide between the rich and the poor?

Exercise 1: An opinion essay

 

Write an opinion essay.

 

Tasks: Write an essay arguing that we should take more individual responsibility to prevent global warming.

 

 Ideas: Think about the following suggestions to protect the environment.

  • alternatives to using cars
  • consuming less in general
  • supporting environmental charities
  • participating in campaigns to raise awareness

 

Plan: Decide which ideas you are going to use and match them to these paragraphs. Make notes.

Paragraph 1: Write an introduction and state your opinion

Paragraph 2,3 and 4: Write an argument for your opinion in each paragraph, giving support and examples. Include an opposing viewpoint sometimes.

Paragraph 5: Conclude by restating your opinion and summarizing the reasons for it.

 

Write: Write your essay.

 

Check: Check the following points.

  • Do your paragraphs contain separate points?
  • Have you used phrases for introducing arguments and giving opinions?
  • Have you check grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation?

 

  1.  Write your task in another program (e.g. Word).
  2.  Save the file to your computer.
  3.  Upload your file.
  4.  If you want to add a note to your teacher, write it in the Comments box.

Look at the picture and answer the questions. Record your answers. Speak for no longer than one minute.

Do you think they agree with each other? Why? Why not? Describe their body language and expressions.

Use phrases from the unit to express the opinion of one of the people in the photo. Then use phrases for reacting to opinions and suggestions. Record what you say.
