2Read Tom’s letter to his friend Bess. How does Tom change his eating patterns before a triathlon? Choose the correct answer.

Hi Bess,

Sorry I haven't been in touch for a while, but as you'll see, things have been a bit busy.

You'll never guess what! My school has chosen me to enter the All Schools Triathlon Championships next year! I've been doing triathlons for a while now. I've always been good at running and swimming, and

A__________ I've liked the idea of doing some serious cycling, I tried it last year and 1luckily / unfortunately I found out that I'm pretty good at that, too. I did a local triathlon last month, which was actually for under-21s. Most of the competitors were older than me, but 2surprisingly / to be honest, I won it!

I've got to do some serious training now though, and I have to go on a diet B__________ build up my strength. 3Obviously / Frankly it's a diet where you have to eat more than usual, not less, and I think I can manage that. They reckon you use about 6,000 calories during a triathlon, and the normal number of calories you eat in a day is about 2,500. It's impossible to eat 6,000 calories in three meals a day, so in the few days before a race, I have to keep eating things all day C__________ my body stores enough for the race.

4Unfortunately / Luckily it's mostly carbohydrates that you have to eat, so things like potatoes, pasta and bread. They aren't my favourite things to fill up on! You shouldn't eat too much fat, D__________ it takes the body too long to turn that into energy when you're exercising. I'm enjoying it, but 5to be honest / sadly I'll be glad when the championships are over and I get back to a more normal life.

Anyway, enough about me! How are you?

Write soon and let me know how everything's going.
