I'm a vegetarian. I never eat meat. When I go out for dinner with friends, I usually have

salad and cheese or eggs. There aren't

6

restaurants that make special food for vegetarians in my city − I think there are only two. I want to make vegetarian pasta tonight, so I'm here in the supermarket and I'm going to buy

7

tomatoes and an onion as well. I need to buy juice, too – there isn't

I'm a fruitarian, like everyone else in my family. This means that I eat

The caveman's diet

What did people eat 100,000 years ago? Were there

1

vegetables in their diet?

2 meat did they eat? Did they drink

3

milk? What was their favourite food? Scientist Rob Svelte answers

4

questions about the diet of the caveman.

'Early humans started using fire 125,000 years ago, and learned to cook

5

meals around the same time. But what exactly did they cook? And how do we know? Well, scientists found bodies of prehistoric people in caves around the world and studied their teeth. There weren't

6

dentists in the Stone Age,' laughs Rob. 'We can learn

7

information from the teeth. For example, we believe that cavemen ate

8

fruit,

9

meat and fish, and even

10

cereal! We think they didn't eat

11

green vegetables, like broccoli, because they didn't like the bitter taste –

12

poisonous plants taste bitter, too. Surprisingly, the early humans didn't drink

13

milk. We didn't start farming animals and drinking their milk until about 8,000 BC.'

So, what was the caveman's favourite food? A burger, of course!
