Exercise 1: Write a description of a process

Write a description of a process.

Task: Do more people in your country drink tea or coffee? Choose one and describe how it is produced: from when the leaves or beans are harvested up to the time it reaches your cup.

Ideas: Research the item you have chosen. Find out some interesting facts about it, and how it is produced.

Plan: Decide on the ideas you are going to use and match them to these paragraphs.

Paragraph 1: Introduce the product, what people use it for today and when people started to use it in the past. Include some interesting facts.

Paragraphs 2 & 3: Describe how it is made, using linking words to show the different stages of the process.

Write: Write your description. Use the paragraph plan to help you.

Check: Check the following points.

  • Are your ideas divided into paragraphs?
  • Are the stages of the process in the correct order?
  • Do the linking words make this clear?
  • Have you checked spelling, grammar and punctuation?
