The population of Australia

In 1787, Britain started sending large numbers of prisoners to the new colonies in Australia. The British government didn't want these criminals in their country, so it was a good

that, in the late eighteenth century, there were about 800,000 native Australians (or Aborigines) on the continent. However, in the next 150 years, this

to about 150,000 by 1950, mostly because of disease. Before the 1970s, most immigrants in Australia were from Europe. Since then, many people of other

of the twentieth century, Australia was truly a multicultural country.
