3.2 ■ Possessive 's

We use 's to show possession.

  • Add 's to a singular noun.

    The boy has got a dog. This is the boy's dog.

    The girl has got two cats. These are the girl's cats.

    Add ' to a plural noun which ends in -s.

    The girls have got a computer.

    This is the girls' computer.

    Add 's to irregular plural nouns which don't end in -s.

    The children have got a ball. This is the children's ball.

REMEMBER: We also use 's in contracted forms of is and has.

John's got a sofa in his bedroom. The sofa's very small.

(= John has got a sofa in his bedroom. The sofa is very small.)

1Complete the sentences with possessive ’s or s’
  • 1Tanya has got a blue bag. This is Tanya blue bag.

  • 2My friend has got a big house. This is my friend big house.

  • 3My parents have got a car. This is my parent car.

  • 4Mrs White has got some plants in her garden. These are Mrs White plants.

  • 5The men have got sandwiches for lunch. These are the men sandwiches.

  • 6The classroom has got fifteen desks. These are the classroom desks.

  • 7The students have got new books. These are the student books.

  • 8The people have got a new president. This is the people new president.

 2Correct the sentences by adding apostrophes. 

  • 1Sophie Sophie's brother lives in France.

  • 2My childrens room is very messy.

  • 3This is my friends new songThey are in a band.

  • 4I've got one catThe cats bed is under the table.
