Exercise 1: Write about your family

Write about a member of your family.

Task: Choose a member of your family that you like a lot. Write a letter to an English-speaking penfriend with a description of this person.

Ideas: Make a list of the members of your family you like the most. Decide who you are going to write about. Make notes about:

  • how often you see them
  • why you like them/their good points
  • anything you don’t like about them/their not-so-good points
  • things they have achieved

Plan: Decide which ideas you are going to use and match them to these paragraphs.

Paragraph 1: Say who you are writing about and why, and how often you see them. Give a brief description of the person.

Paragraph 2: Talk about their good points and any important things they have done.

Paragraph 3: Mention any negative points they have.

Paragraph 4: Sum up why they are important to you.

Write: Write your letter. Use the paragraph plan to help you.

Check: Check the following points.

  • Are your ideas divided into paragraphs?
  • Does each paragraph have a clear topic and a topic sentence?
  • Have you checked spelling, grammar and punctuation?
