Exercise 1: A personal letter

 

Write an informal letter to a friend.

 

Task: You have been ill for a month and have not been able to write to a close friend.



Ideas: Decide who you are going to write to and makes notes about the following ideas.

  • Who is the letter for?
  • Your health – what was wrong and how do you feel now?
  • What are you doing now?
  • Questions you ask your friends in letters
  • Phrases you need for explaining and apologising

 

Plan: Decide which ideas you are going to use and match them to these paragraphs.

Paragraph 1: Start the letter and ask some questions about how your friend has been.

Paragraph 2: Explain why you have not written, giving reasons and describing how ill you were.

Paragraph 3: Describe how you feel now and what you are doing.

Paragraph 4: Ask your friend some questions and promise to stay in touch.

 

Write: Write your letter. Use the paragraph plan to help you.

 

Check: Check the following points.

  • Is the style and tone of the letter informal?
  • Have you begun and ended the letter appropriately?
  • Have you used the correct expressions to give reasons and apologise?
  • Have you checked grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation?

 

  1.  Write your task in another program (e.g. Word).
  2.  Save the file to your computer.
  3.  Upload your file.
  4.  If you want to add a note to your teacher, write it in the Comments box.
  5.  Select Submit to Dropbox to send your work to your teacher.
