Exercise 1: Write an informal letter

Write an informal letter.

Task: This is part of a letter you have received from an English penfriend.

We always go to the same place on holiday. We stay in a cottage in a fishing village in the south of England. Some things are exactly the same as at home. For example, my dad always takes the dog for a walk before breakfast. And I always have the same thing for breakfast as I do when I’m at home. And my sister is still really annoying!

But other things are really different. I often stay in bed till ten or eleven o’clock in the morning. And we eat out in restaurants in the evening. What are things like when you go on holiday? What’s the same and what’s different? Write and tell me.

Yours, Ryan

Ideas: Answer the questions and make notes.

1 Where do you go on holiday? Do you always go to the same place or to different places?

2 What things do you do the same on holiday?

3 What things do you do differently?

Plan: Decide which ideas to use and match them to these paragraphs.

Paragraph 1: Thank Ryan for his letter.

Paragraph 2: Write about the similarities. The things you do the same on holiday as at home.

Paragraph 3: Write about the differences. The things you do differently on holiday to what you do at home.

Paragraph 4: Say where you are next going on holiday and whether you are looking forward to it.

Write: Write a letter to Ryan.

  • Have you included the address and the date? Have you signed your letter?
